Documentary on Natalia Osipova will broadcast May 2019

Justine Waddell's love for Russian cinema began when she learned Russian for her role in Russian language film, Target. She learned Russian by watching classic Russian films. And it was a real turning point in her career. She set up a charity, Kino Klassika, to fundraise to preserve and restore classic Russian language cinema from all over the former Soviet Union. She also organizes screenings, publications and exhibitions to raise awareness about the rich visual history of the region. She believes that cinema can be about connecting people through shared cultural experiences.

Justine also runs a film company, Asterisk, which focuses on making feature films and documentaries. Currently, she is producing a documentary on the Royal ballet superstar Natalia Osipova, in association with Sky Arts. Natalia is famous for her breathtaking performances as the star of American Theatre Ballet and the Bolshoi. The documentary follows Natalia through her 2018 London season and includes footage from her show Pure Dance at Sadler’s Wells, the Royal Ballet production of La Bayadere and a new ballet commission with Arthur Pita. Promising never before seen footage from Natalia’s personal archive as well as unique rehearsal footage of Natalia at the Opera House, this should be a highlight of next year’s arts programming. The documentary is directed by the BAFTA and Grierson award winning documentary filmmaker Gerry Fox.
